This has been created to help you take the awarenesses of the body from yoga into your everyday life.
It's great for the yogis who want to take their practice off the mat, and an ideal way for those that can't fit in a class to incorporate more mindful movements into their day.
Some of these stretches introduced will seem really simple but often we do them quite unconsciously or not at all,
so the aim is to get you moving consciously noticing the movements of your body as you do.
These ones are great lying down first thing in the morning as you reduce the influence of gravity on the body and can get more stretch as a result. But if you are already out and about you can definitely do these ones standing up too.
{And as I've posted this rather late due to video uploading issues, you can also do it in bed before you go to sleep}
As you move into the stretch, pay attention to the body.
The body is not as flexibly and open first thing in the morning as it will be by the end of the day.
The saying is "Pain, no gain" in yoga and not the one more commonly used ;)
The reason we do these stretches first is because we are aiming to release the fascia of the muscle first so we can get more movement from the muscle within it. The fascia is like an outer skin that contains the muscle, I think of it like the skin of a sausage and the meat within is the muscle. Tight fascia is similar to trying to move in a really tight pair of jeans. Not as easy as in a pair of track suit pants. Another reason not to wear tight fitting clothing, particularly when you are participating in yoga or physical training of any sort as it can affect the range of movements of your muscles.
Another factor that can affect the fascia causing tightness is not drinking enough water. So over the course of the month, as you do these stretches each morning, notice how you feel from day to day and if your water intake may be influencing how you move.
So watch the video, try the stretches, and let me know how you go.
